After researching on EMA, a robotic girlfriend, I went on the net to find a robotic boyfriend or a virtual boyfriend.

And here it is: Ikemen bank, or a handsome man piggy bank.

Ikemen bank  is essentially a piggy bank for dreamy lonley Japanese women. Inside the bank, there is a  dreamboat boyfriend who whispers sweet romantic phrases, compliments, or even ask for kiss, every time you save your pocket change. (ex: “Can I rub your shoulders?”) There are even a selection of 5 different cartoon hunks in 1 piggy bank! This $75 bank also functions as an alarm clock, waking you up with romantic phrases, but it does not vibrate in any way, just to clarify on that part  lol But if you fall in love with the boys, you can easily save up to 50,000JPY ($500)

So here is how it works:

  1. Save $75 to buy the piggy bank
  2. Choose which of the 5 hunks you want to date (funny they all have realistic social status)
    a. Cool guy Hayato, a model
    b. Younger boyfriend Takeru, a sporty hunk
    c. Funny comedia Ryo
    d. Older responsible CEO of an IT company
    e. Wealthy boy
  3. put in your first 500JPY ($5) coin, and your love affair with the boy of your choice begins
  4. Every 500JPY coin you put, the story continues (until the maximum 50,000JPY, there are 100 episodes)
  5. And then… what happens at the ending? I looked up on the internet but I think they are confidential and I can’t find out what happen after 100 coins… probably marriage and children and successful career LoL

This concept of handsome men trapped in a piggy bank actually came from manga series, and became an actual product, and it is now going to be a movie premiering in Japan from March 19th (and I have no plan of going to see it) In keeping with this general theme of 5 guys in love with you, the movie is about a girl at the center of a love triangle—or more accurately, a love hexagon—in which 5 good looking guys become infatuated with her.

"really? that's ok?"

Ugggh, as if it’s not already difficult to find a partner in Tokyo Meet Market, now stores are selling robot girlfriends, which means more competitors for women in the Tokyo Meet Market.

Ladies! the enemy’s name is E.M.A.

E.M.A (エマ) stands for Eternal, Maiden, Actualization and is 38 centimeters tall, has a curvaceous body, sings and dances and using infrared sensors the robot  will kiss nearby otaku when it goes into “Love Mode”. The female shaped humanoid robot was unveiled at the International Tokyo Toy Show June ’08 and is now on sale from SEGA from September ’08 for the price of 19,000JPY (about $190)

Here is more information on EMA:

TOKYO (Reuters) – She is big-busted, petite, very friendly, and she runs on batteries.A Japanese firm has produced a 38 cm (15 inch) tall robotic girlfriend that kisses on command, to go on sale in September with a target market of lonely adult men.  Using her infrared sensors and battery power, the diminutive damsel named “EMA” puckers up for nearby human heads, entering what designers call its “love mode”.  “Strong, tough and battle-ready are some of the words often associated with robots, but we wanted to break that stereotype and provide a robot that’s sweet and interactive,” said Minako Sakanoue, a spokeswoman for the maker, Sega Toys.”  She’s very lovable and though she’s not a human, she can act like a real girlfriend.”  EMA, which stands for Eternal Maiden Actualization, can also hand out business cards, sing and dance, with Sega hoping to sell 10,000 in the first year.  Japan, home to almost half the world’s 800,000 industrial robots, envisions a $10-billion market for artificial intelligence in a decade.  (Reporting by Chika Osaka; writing by Rodney Joyce, editing by Miral Fahmy)

I wonder when they will make KEN or something like that so the lonely women can come home to “lovable boyfriend.” In fact, one of the most popular TV show from 2008 was about a robotic boyfriend called Zettai Kareshi “absolute boyfriend” which is a bout a girl accidentally orders a super expensive robotic boyfriend who finally accepts her and love her for who she is, after she’s been rejected by so many guys…

You see how lonely and hard it is to be out in the Tokyo Meet Market. People would actually compromise with a robotic boyfriend/girlfriend to ease their pain and loneliness…

and she's already kissing him! lol poor bastard!

What is Tokyo Meet Market?

From the Western perspective, what goes on in the Japanese dating scene is really different and interesting! In this shy nation of Japan, meeting new people is almost institutionalized, dating and romance is littered with conventions that protect people from social awkwardness. What are dating conventions and rules in Japan? How do the shy Japanese people meet new people, develop affection, and express their passion? As I research and answer these question, I will write a real time report of what's going on in the Tokyo dating scene, or the "Tokyo Meet Market" here in this blog. I hope you enjoy my blog and a trip around Tokyo Meet Market with me!
